Shimla is situated at a height of 2000 meters, a perfect destination for travelers but there is no direct train from Delhi to Shimla. While travelling from Delhi to Shimla through train one has to travel first to Kalka and from there to Shimla. The train from Delhi to Kalka is a broad gauge train but from Kalka to Shimla its narrow gauge and toy trains run over this track. The important stops in between Delhi and Kalka are Sonepat, panipat, Karnal, Ambala, Chandigarh and then Kalka, situated in the basin of shivalik ranges. Journey from Delhi to Shimla by road is a 10 hour journey by bus and 8-9 hours by your own vehicle, 7 hrs from Delhi to Chandigarh and 4hr from Chandigarh onward to shimla. The distance between Delhi and Shimla is round about 360 km. The main points between Delhi and Chandigarh by road are Sonepat, Panipat, Karnal, Pipli, Kurukshetra, and Ambala and after Chandigarh are Panchkula, Pinjore, kalka, Solan, Shoghi, Taradevi and finally Shimla. From Delhi till Ambala is NH 1 journey and from Chandigarh to Shimla is NH 22.

The journey can be made lengthier yet more interesting by pausing at various cities you are going to pass by. Panipat is a place where 3 battles were fought in Indian history. Further moving is karnal on G.T road, further ahead is pipli, where meals can be taken and Kurukshetra is the next point. The distance from kurukshetra to Ambala is 43 km.

After Ambala you move on to Chandigarh and then to kalka. After parwanoo the drive is uphill but hilly and terrain and amazingly picturesque. You can have food at jabli where lots of dhabas especially for travelers are located. Further this route will lead you to Dharampur and then the vehicle moves in upward direction to Barog hills. Going down from here, you just reach the Solan city, which is very big city in this track. Now Shimla is just about 43 km. Next main stoppage is Kandaghat which directly leads to the Shoghi the entry point of shimla. From here you are just 13km away from shimla. In a few minutes you are in the queen of hills i.e. Shimla. On the way you can enjoy the scenic beauty of Shimla.
