Govindgarh Fort Amritsar
Govindgarh Fort was earlier called Bhangian Da Fort and if you go to Amritsar, you must go here. Gujjar Singh Bhangi’s army of Misal built this fort in 1960 with brick and lime. It also has four huge fortifications, two strong iron gates and a perkota. This fort was rebuilt by Maharaja Ranjit Singh between 1805 and 1809.
In 1849, the British took possession of this fort. He built the Durbar Hall, Hawa Mahal and the hanging houses here. It is said that the residence of General Dyer, who conducted the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919, was right in front of the hanging house, so that he could enjoy the hanging being given to the prisoners.
After independence, the Indian Army took the fort under its control in order to provide temporary protection to the immigrant Pakistanis who came to India from Pakistan in 1948. Witnessing the historical event of the Indian freedom struggle, this fort was opened to the general public in 2006 by Captain Amarender Singh, the Chief Minister of Punjab.
