Chhoti Kashi Mandi
The city of Mandi, situated in the middle of Himachal Pradesh, is also known as Chhoti Kashi. The reason for this is the presence of 81 ancient temples here. The largest numbers of these ancient temples are of the temples of Lord Shiva. The kings who ruled the Mandi princely state centuries ago have unwavering faith in Lord Shiva. The kings built Shivalayas according to their wish. With the changing times, this city came to be known as Chhoti Kashi and Shivbhoomi. There are dozens of ancient temples of Lord Shiva in the city of Mandi, mainly Baba Bhootnath, Ekadash Rudra, Ardhanarishwar, Trilokinath, Panchavaktra, Neelkanth Mahadev and Mahamrityunjya.
Due to these temples of Lord Shiva, an attempt was made to make Shivratri of Mandi city something special. Centuries ago, a king asked the people of his princely state to come to him along with the deities on Shivaratri. Once started, it became a tradition and till today this tradition is practiced. A day before Shivratri, the chief deity of the district reaches Mandi and celebrates the festival of Shivratri here. Gradually the nature of this tradition grew and today it has become an internationally renowned festival.
