The Chandigarh to Amritsar distance is 240 Kilometers and travel time is 4.5 to 6 hours. The road is partially four laned. The road towards Amritsar passes through Mohali and is common exit for Ludhiana, Amritsar and Manali up to Kharar at a distance of 18 kilometers from Chandigarh. From Kharar one road takes left turn towards Ludhiana and the straight road goes towards Jalandhar Amritsar and Manali. At a further distance of about 30 Kilometers the road passes through Ropar. One road bifurcates from this towards the right for Kullu Manali and Dharamshala. The road further passes through small towns like Balachaur, Nawashehar and Banga to reach Phagwara 90 Kilometers from Ropar. Take the bye pass road from Phagwara to avoid the city rust which in turn connects to National Highway number 1 (Delhi Jalandhar Road).

Favourite eat out stopovers
Just at the entrance of Jalandhar city on the right side of the road, take a break at the old Lucky Dhaba or the new favourite Haveli where traditional food is served in traditional utensils with Punjabi music in the background. Over the years Haveli has become a favourite eating point and people from far off places also come to have food here.
From Jalandhar Amritsar is another 80 Kms and takes about 2 hours to reach there.

Chandigarh to Amritsar by train
Being at a diversion of northern railways from Ambala Chandigarh is connected to rest of India through Ambala only. There are no direct Chandigarh to Amritsar trains. One has to go to Ambala at a distance of 45 kilometers from Chandigarh to catch train for Amritsar. As Amritsar is on the opposite side, this increases the distance and travel time so people prefer to travel by bus only.
