Objective of the Attari Wagah Border Ceremony

A ceremony is held here daily called the Wagah Border Ceremony. The Wagah border ceremony began in 1959. The main objective of the Wagah border ceremony is to create an atmosphere of mutual cooperation and harmony between the two countries. It is popularly known as Beating Retreat Ceremony. During this ceremony the border is formally closed and the flags of both the countries are flagged off honorably. This ceremony is held every evening before sunset. It is an entertainment ceremony in which patriotism is at full display. The josh is created by patriotic songs, video clips on giant Screens, flag runs and sloganeering.

Attari Wagah border Parade timing

The ceremony lasts for about 45 minutes. A large number of tourists visit this ceremony. As there are limited seats not everyone can get in, so if you want to watch the ceremony, you have to reach the place before 3:00 pm, not later than that. The Beating Retreat ceremony (Wagah Border Ceremony) begins at 4:15 pm in winter and 4:45 pm in summer. There is a huge open air theater built on the Indian side for this. People from Pakistan also visit this place to see this ceremony and sit inside their enclosures which are relatively small.

There is no ticket fee for viewing ceremonies. For advance entry passes, go to BSF cantt in Khasa village and book your seat.  Khasa village is located just a few km from the Attari border. While going there, do not forget to take your ID proof with you.

The ceremony place is located in Attari in Amritsar in the state of Punjab, India. Attari Wagah border is 27 km from Amritsar. You can take taxis or private buses from Amritsar that drop you off at the customs post. Or you can also arrange for a taxi with the hotel you are staying in.

In 2011, the permit restriction was enforced by NGT for any vehicles travelling on Manali to Rohtang Pass road in that very direction. Rohtang Pass is also one of the most beautiful and popular highway routes in the world.  The vehicle may or may not go to Rohtang pass if roads are closed by BRO due to snowfall / adverse weather conditions/ restrictions by NGT.   1. As per current status only 400 Diesel and 800 petrol vehicles are allowed by NGT daily.
  2. All the vehicles required Rohtang Pass permission to Visit Rohtang.
  3. You can take a permit in two time slots daily online
    (i) 10:00 hrs (200 Diesel and 400 Petrol)
    (ii) 16:00 hrs (200 Diesel and 400 Petrol)
  4. One permit will applicable for one vehicle and only for one day.
  5. One vehicle can apply for permit 3 times in a week.
  6. No permits are issued for Tuesdays as Rohtang Pass remains closed for maintenance work on this day.
  7. Tourists can get their travel permits maximum of 6 days in advance.
  8. If you are travelling to Ladakh or Spiti via Manali, this is the permit you would need to obtain. From Manali Leh highway you do not need any.
  9. You can  take the government buses for rohtang pass and for that you don’t required any permit.
